From the Community, for the Community

SAVE THE DATE! This year’s WNA Plant Sale — an event held annually on the day before Mother’s day — takes place Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 9am to 3pm at the Woodstock Community Center (5905 SE 43rd Avenue). Proceeds go to the Woodstock Community Center Maintenance Fund, which supplements neighborhood volunteer efforts to provide routine maintenance for the Center. This is a key part of the agreement between the Woodstock Neighborhood Association and Portland Parks and Recreation that keeps the Center open and available for community use. The Maintenance Fund pays for custodial service and supplies, as well as some landscaping and other needs.

The success of the plant sale hinges on generous plant donations from the gardeners in our community. Gardeners contribute by potting divided perennials or seedling “volunteers” from previous years’ plantings. Sometimes people contribute plants they have decided to replace. In addition to many varieties of perennials, plant sale offerings usually include vegetable starts, herbs, ground covers, native plants, grasses, houseplants, and small trees and shrubs. Ours is one of the longest running plant sales in Portland, and one of the best in terms of selection and prices. Because the plants come from neighbors, they tend to be things that do well in the Woodstock climate.

Plant contributions are received at the Woodstock Community Center the day before the sale between noon and 7pm. This year, that’s Friday, May 8th. Although May seems a long way off yet, it’s not too early to begin potting up plants. If you need empty pots, call Terry Griffiths at 503-771-0011.
